Amazon.com Product Description Speedier than ever with the latest Intel dual-core processor, the Apple iMac all-in-one desktop PC sports a sleek, professional aluminum enclosure that's joined precisely to a 20-inch glass cover to create a virtually seamless front surface. It's powered by a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which includess an amazingly fast 1066 MHz front-side bus speed and super-sized 6 MB L2 cache. Part of Intel's 45-nanometer (nm) Penryn series, this processor boosts both speed and efficiency while helping to reduce power consumption. This dual-core processor also provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved multitasking, video, and gaming performance. The iMac also features an ultra-thin aluminum Apple Keyboard--with an extended layout and dedicated keys for Mac features such as brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, and Exposé--as well as the wired Mighty Mouse. It's pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which enables easy backup of your most important data via Time Machine, a redesigned desktop that helps eliminate clutter. It also comes with the iLife '08 suite of applications--including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes--and the newest version of the fast-loading Safari web browser. Hardware features include a 250 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM (with a 4 GB maximum capacity), 8x SuperDrive for burning movies to DVD and music mixes to CD, integrated 802.11n wireless LAN, Gigabit Ethernet wired networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR connectivity, and ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT video card with 128 MB dedicated memory. Power on a Pedestal
Designed with a recyclable anodized aluminum frame and glass cover, the iMac is friendlier to the environment.. |
The new keyboard's ultrathin anodized aluminum enclosure features low-profile keys that provide a crisp, responsive feel. | With its anodized aluminum frame set upon a sleek pedestal, the new iMac instantly transforms your workspace from cluttered desktop to brilliant display podium. Because the iMac's housing is made from a single sheet of aluminum, you won't see any seams or screws except for a single compartment on the bottom that provides easy access to the memory slots. The glossy widescreen 20-inch glass display makes photos and movies come alive with rich color. And the built-in iSight camera and microphone are integrated so neatly you barely notice they're there. Aside from the design details, the iMac is also friendlier to the environment with highly recyclable and durable materials including scratch-resistant glass and professional grade aluminum. The power-efficient iMac also meets the stringent new Energy Star 4.0 requirements. With its elegant anodized aluminum enclosure, the new Apple Keyboard looks equally at home in your living room or on your desk. Just connect it to the USB port on your iMac and start enjoying the crisp, responsive feel of its low-profile keys. The extended layout has a full complement of keys, including document navigation controls, a numeric keypad, and special function keys for Mac features such as brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, Exposé, and more. Two USB 2.0 ports provide high-speed connectivity for your iPod, Mighty Mouse, digital camera, and other USB-based electronic devices. | Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience faster, more nimble application performance and improved energy efficiency with this 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor from Intel's 45nm Penryn lineup. The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--helps to reduce power consumption while delivering. powerful processing speeds. This 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor is aided by a 1066 front-side bus speed and a super-sized 6 MB L2 cache--both top-of-the-line for Intel's Penryn processors. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts. Hard Drive and Memory The 250 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 1 GB of PC6400 DDR2 RAM (one SO-DIMM) has an industry-leading 800 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 4 GB. Graphics and Video The 20-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix LCD offers a resolution of 1680 by 1050 pixels. It has a brightness rating of 290 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), a contrast ratio of 800:1, and a viewing angle of 160 degrees (both horizontal and vertical). An ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics processor powers the iMac with 128 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory. It features some of the most advanced graphics technology available and delivers new levels of visual realism and a huge texture fill rate for smooth surfaces and complex character details. GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3) is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications. This iMac also enables you to connect a second display in either extended desktop mode or video mirroring mode. The mini-DVI port connects to DVI displays, VGA monitors and projectors, and S-video and composite devices using the appropriate adapter (sold separately). Wired and Wireless Connectivity
You get a full complement of ports on the back of the iMac, including three USB 2.0 and two flavors of Firewire--400 and 800. | The iMac gives you plenty of room to grow, accommodating as many as five peripherals at a time thanks to its three USB 2.0 ports and the two USB 2.0 ports on the Apple Keyboard. It also includes two powered FireWire ports--one FireWire 400 and one FireWire 800 (one of the fastest peripheral standards available)--enabling you to quickly transfer content from digital video cameras, hard drives, and other high-speed devices. Share files around your house with built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet as well as the next-generation high-speed wireless 802.11n technology, which is integrated into the latest Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. The iMac is also Wi-Fi Certified to work with base stations and routers that use industry-standard 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g wireless technologies. The integrated Bluetooth wireless connectivity--version 2.1 + Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)--allows you to use a wireless keyboard or mouse, and synchronize peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs. Enjoy high-quality sound on almost any speaker system with double-duty analog/digital audio. Record digital and analog sources through audio line in, perfect for your latest podcast in GarageBand. Mac user for life March 27, 2010 James Short I have had this iMac that I purchased from Amazon for almost 2 years now, and I would buy it again if I had to! This was my first Mac an I will never buy another windows PC again.
After years years of fighting with frustrating windows based PC's, I am glad to say this is the best computer I have ever owned.
With windows based computer I would constantly have to worry about viruses and would have to reformat and reinstall the OS several time a year. With this Mac I powered it up and have only had to manually reset it twice in 2 years. There were a few problems with the release on Snow Leopard OS but, that was resolved in about 2 weeks with up dates.
The iMac is a beautiful computer and functional. I love the mac keyboard, you don't have to worry about crumb getting in the keys on this one. Its also much more quiet than standard keyboards. My mac came with the wired mighty mouse and this is the only thing that I have problems with sometimes. The cord is kind of short and the ball on the top gets dirty and does not function. There is no easy way to open up the mouse and clean it, if you are willing too, there are videos on youtube that show you how to open it and clean it. It really is not that hard, I have done it.
I love my iMac and the only reason i would replace this one would to buy the newer and larger 27" model.
For those of you who say a mac cost to much, it like that old saying, "you get what you pay for." You can go buy a $600 dollar PC and be aggravated by all windows problems and security flaws. fighting viruses and always getting asked if you want to do stuff. Or you can spend a little more on a mac that you can just use and enjoy the entire time that you own it, and for those programs that are windows only, you can now install windows on your mac to run them when needed.
The iMac is a beautiful and functional computer that takes up minimal space and is always there running with no headaches. Buy a Mac and you will never look back!
Wonderful! October 27, 2009 Angeluza7782 (PR) I was a PC user until I got my iMac.
This iMac is great, just great. I've had mine for quite some time now and I love it because it has remained fast and without any problems.
I use it for writing, searching the web in multiple pages and tabs, Photo Shop and all related photographic or graphic uses, video making and editing, etc...
It simple and it works just great straight out of the box.
I strongly recommend it.
Horrible Customer Service and Worthless Warranty - Apple Case # 13588253 October 13, 2009 David K. Steege (orlando, FL United States) My 24" I-Mac, with upgraded video card and 4-gigs of memory, kept locking up on me and finally died after just 13 months (two months longer than my free I-pod touch that came with it which is another story). After three calls to Apple, it was determined that it was not the upgrade to snow leopard OS causing the problems but that it was a hardware failure. Apple care made the appointment for me to take it into an apple store; however, I was told I had to wait two days for an appointment to take it in. Why couldn't I take the same day is beyond me. My defective I-Mac is my main computer and I am an online student that needs a computer.
At the appointment, it was determined that the logic board needs to be replaced. I was promised it would only take 5-7 days to repair it but it actually took 8 days! May I remind you that this is my main computer that is also my only TV using Eye TV3 and HD USB tuner card (which works great).
When I got the I-Mac back, I found out that they didn't change the logic board as promised, but switched out the video card. Two days after I got my machine back, it once again started locking up. I have contacted Apple Care once again and after two calls they agreed it was a hardware issue.
A second trip to the apple store at Millenia Mall was made. They again agreed that it was the same hardware issue and stated the new video card they just installed went bad. I was told that they couldn't fix my computer because the store was about to be remodeled and that I needed to take my computer to another apple store. They supposedly "fixed" my problem, right? Then why am I being sent someplace else?
I asked to speak to the store manager and talked to Chris Warmington, the Assistant Manager at Millenia Mall in Orlando. He explained the same thing to me saying that their store is closing and I need to take it to another store.
I have already spent five hours trying to get my computer in for repair and already struggled with my online classes having no computer for two weeks! It was horrible knowing somehow that their customer "dis-service" is going nowhere. The only reason they agreed to try to fix the computer before store closing was because other customers were starting to agree with me. It might hurt their current sales. I was told that they were going the extra mile to help me but that I may have to pick up the broken computer when they close to remodel for a week.
At this point, I asked for a replacement or a refund for my purchase. I had been without a computer for two weeks and it was going to be even longer! Chris Warmington said that APPLE WILL NEVER REPLACE A COMPUTER OVER 90 DAYS OLD REGRADLESS OF THE REASON OR REFUND THE PURCHASE PRICE. At the end of the week, the store called with good news. They have delayed the remodeling of their store so I would not have to pick up the unit. But there is a problem. The part that they needed was classified as "restricted part" and did not know when they could get it in. I asked for an upgrade to my video card to another one that was in stock but was told that there were no compatible cards.
I again asked for a new computer but was told that "APPLE WILL NEVER REPLACE A COMPUTER OVER 90 DAYS OLD REGRADLESS OF THE REASON." I now asked for a loaner computer so I could complete my online class. Chris said, "We have meet all obligations under apple care agreement and will repair it as soon as we get the part. You're welcome to take your I-Mac if you don't want us to repair it at this time." I told him it doesn't do me any good when it was nonfunctioning to complete my online class. I had to stay extra hours at work to have access to a computer for my online classes. This is time lost with my family because Apple doesn't care that I have not had a working computer for over a month now and cannot get a date when I will get it back.
I do not recommend Apple products. Go for PC! Apple products may be nice when they work but if they break, don't expect apple to care or to do anything for you.
[...]. I will never buy another Apple product.
Over priced here. October 2, 2009 Michael Williams (Warwick RI) Great computer worthy of 5 stars except this model is last years model and its replacement versions direct from Apple cost less and have double the ram and bigger hard drives. This machine aught to be priced around $1000.
dead lcd in three years August 25, 2009 John Yavorsky Up until 8/22, I would have rated my 20" imac as 5 stars. Then the screen turned black. There is no easy way to hook up an external monitor with the built-in monitor dead. PC's have keyboard functions that can be used. I understand lcd replacement is $900!!! Not happy with short LCD life. I would be happier if there was a way to bypass built-in screen. Consider apple care if you have all your eggs in this relatively expensive basket.
