Amazon.com Product Description Offering top-of-the-line multimedia functionality for HD video enthusiasts and PC gamers, the stylishly appointed Toshiba Satellite X205-S9800 notebook PC is highlighted by its widescreen 17-inch LCD with a 1440 x 900-pixel resolution for true 720p high-def video playback. You'll enjoy smooth video rendering from DVDs and games, thanks to the high-end Nvidia GeForce 8700M graphics card, with 512 MB of discrete video memory. And the integrated Dolby Home Theater feature set will envelope any room in surround sound via the four Harman Kardon speakers. It's powered by the 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor, which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, as well as excellent battery management. It also includes Intel's 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. Other features include a 250 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), dual-layer DVD RW drive, biometric fingerprint scanner, 5-in-1 memory card reader, and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR wireless connectivity. This PC also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate, which combines all the features of Windows Vista Premium and Vista Business as well as adds extras such as multi-language packs and Secure Online Key Backup. It offers all of the features found in Windows Vista Home Premium, including Windows Media Center, Windows Movie Maker with high-definition support, and Windows DVD Maker. It also provides all of the features found in Windows Vista Business, including business networking, centralized management tools, and advanced system backup features. Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include: - Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
- Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
- Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
- Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.
- Hard Drive: The extra-large 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3-D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 4x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 8x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 104-key keyboard--with 10-keypad on the side--and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio This notebook has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing). It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 8700M graphics card, which provides up to 767 MB of available RAM/video memory (512 MB dedicated DDR2 RAM) for unmatched HD video performance on a notebook PC. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), it lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Experience real-time photo editing, or immerse yourself in the most complex, true-to-life gaming environments. It includes the Dolby Home Theater set of features, which provide up to 5.1 discrete channels of crystal-clear digital surround sound as well as virtual 5.1-channel surround sound experience from any pair of stereo speakers. It also features four stylishly incorporated Harman Kardon stereo speakers with a built-in subwoofer. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with this notebook's integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You also get super-fast wired connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000). You'll enjoy wireless connectivity to a wide range of peripherals with the built-in Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR (enhanced data rate), which offers up to three times the bandwidth of standard Bluetooth. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (as well as a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options: - 6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable)
- Standard video output: VGA and S-Video
- 1 ExpressCard 54/34
- 1 headphone jack (1 with S/PDIF digital audio compatibility) and 1 microphone jack
- 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
- 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet
- 56K modem (V.90)

Would love it, but... December 24, 2008 R. Shugrue (Leander, Texas) Toshiba Satellite X205-SLI4 17-inch Laptop (Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T8100 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Vista Ultimate) Red Satin I have had the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLI4 laptop for a little while now and I have only been able to use it for a couple of weeks. It keeps dying. And when I say dying I mean DEAD. No power, light, activity. Nothing! I've returned it for RMA twice and both times they claim it is the video cards. It is currently on its way back a third time. I don't know what I can do. When it runs, boy howdy does it run. The thing is a dream. Complete desktop replacement for me. But, as I've said, I have only had it running and usable for a total of two weeks. It has been at Toshiba being repaired longer than I have had it working. Anyway, stay away from this laptop. The dual NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT cards are apparently pieces of dung. I hope this saves someone the disappointment I've experienced.
An excellent notebook for the price December 14, 2008 Bron (Richmond, VA USA) Toshiba X205-S9800 This is an excellent laptop with a very good keyboard and very nice, sturdy all around design. The audio on this unit is simply outstanding! Far, far, far above the norm. You really have to hear it to appreciate it, but it truly puts most rigs to shame in the audio department. The 8700M GT is an outstanding graphics card. Great for gaming and video work. I played Crysis demo on medium settings fine (DX 9 mode, 1024x768) and it looks great. Beautiful case if that matters to you. I get a lot of nice comments on its appearance. The 1.83 Ghz dual core processor is plenty fast for most things. Now, you will notice if you do a lot of video conversions and other processor intensive stuff, but how many people do that? Well, I do, and I can live with this rig, though I prefer my other HP unit with a T9300 for those things. The screen is very bright, in fact, I found it too bright. Had to turn it down considerably. My biggest complaint about the design is the placement of the 4 USB ports, 2 are on the front right where they are in the way (in my opinion) if you hook anything up. But I solved that by buying the logitech wireless mouse with the really tiny USB key, so I could use something on 'em. It's a minor issue, though. All around, this is a better than average notebook/DTR with some outstanding features in this price range: 8700M GT is a great graphics card and very rare in notebooks, superior audio - those Harmon-Kardon speakers rock!, great full size keyboard and sturdy design. Eye catching appearance (I don't mind wiping down the case to get the snazzy look). Snappy Vista performance out of the box and, hey, it includes recovery disks (as all pc's/notebooks should - I'm looking at you HP!). Great rig, especially if you can find it on sale. It's big - so don't take it on the airplane, this is more of a DTR than a carry-round unit. But if you want a portable gaming rig and can't afford those $3-5K monsters, this will do you very well.
True Desktop Replacement December 5, 2008 Murat Abus (Greater Baghdad Area, Iraq) I have bought this laptop in November 2007 to replace my laptop which died after three years of service. At the time, I was primarily looking to purchase the best that the market had to offer and I chose the Toshiba Satellite X205SLI2 as it was a good money/value proposition. I have since upgraded the RAM to 4GB and one year on, I can say that the machine had absolutely no problems and performs as you would expect from a top-of-the-line product. I am giving it a 5-star for its standing as a desktop replacement.
If you like buying batteries October 21, 2008 Grimmy (MD USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've bought two Satellite laptops, and both have had their batteries fail within two years. One of them won't keep a charge for more than a few minutes, and sometimes powers off when you disconnect the AC power; the other sometimes just shuts down at the slightest movement. When we called the tech support, they didn't mention that the batteries were subject to recall; now I just found out, and Toshiba won't process the recall. I don't know if the problems are battery related, since it'll cost $500 to have Toshiba diagnose the problem. That's right, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS once it's out of warranty. The screen on the newer laptop - just two years old - has gone funky, with some horizontal lines. They both run somewhat warm, with the fan going nonstop. As you can tell, these are my last Toshiba laptop purchases. It's great value for the first year, so enjoy!
A top-notch laptop for power users July 13, 2008 A. Cross First, the bottom line: If you're someone who's heavily into gaming, watching videos or any 'power' application, you won't find a better 17" laptop for under 1800. And, right now you can cut that MSRP by more than half. Check with your local BestBuy (BB) - they are selling these off as floor samples for < 900. That's a truly unbeatable deal. Second: Just got through reading the other reviews, here. Isn't it amazing how many people buy something (esp. an expensive something), only to later complain about dimensions & features which were plainly evident before they bought it? Makes me shake my head, every time. Its like whining about how the VW Beetle is 'small and curvy'. Come on, folks, read the darn specs or don't grouse when FedEx shows up, Ok? Didn't you notice those color photos, showing the shiny, plastic case? You think a 3" x 6.5" power brick makes this laptop 'unroadable', but _not_ the 17" screen & nearly 10 lb. weight? And then there's my favorite: the guy who compares this beast to a puny, 13" Mac 'Air'. Jeez, give me a break. Third, my review: The X205-SLI2 performs brilliantly - very fast despite the somewhat piggish OS (Vista), even with a stock 2Gb RAM. H-K's stereo system is surprisingly good. Sure, my H-K desktop speakers are better, but this Toshiba offers the best sound I've heard from any laptop. And the LCD produces gorgeous, well-lit images. I plan tests vs. a MacBook Pro, ASAP. Lots of nice touches, too. Given its weight & size, I was happy to see the nearly full-length hinge. And, holy cow, can you believe all the ports on this thing? 6 USB2, Gb Ethernet, HDMI, S-video, Express Card, blah, blah...even a 5-in-1 card reader? Plus, as laptops go, the X205 does not run very hot. My scope showed typical surface temps of only ~105F-110F, near the vents (my coffee is hotter) and cooler on the bottom, which is unvented. My own whining: I was surprised to see Toshiba loaded in several demos & craplets but no cool games. Meanwhile, BB installed SP1 before delivery - without asking me - and this caused a few problems. Keyboard is average, at best; this ain't no ThinkPad, folks. I wish the wireless switch was in prefs, not on the case. The touchpad locks up during wireless mouse install (?). Oh, and space for an optional, backup battery would be nice. Otherwise, I'm very pleased. Again, its the best 17" machine at this price, esp. if you get a discontinued unit from BB. I saved so much cash that I've already ordered 4Gb RAM. I'm looking into a processor upgrade and the possibility of dual booting XP, from drive #2 (drivers are available only from Toshiba's non-US websites). If you're shopping around for a 17" lappy, this is definitely one to consider - you won't be disappointed.
