Amazon.com Product Description
Weighing just 4.6 pounds, the ultra-portable Toshiba Satellite U305-S5127 notebook PC packs in an extraordinary amount of power and productivity into its elegant, compact package. The 13.3-inch widescreen display offers TruBrite technology for optimal image clarity and a 1280 x 800 resolution for extra desktop working space and a widescreen aspect ratio for watching letterboxed DVDs. It has a special shock-absorbing design with airpocket cushioning and padding materials that protects key components (HDD, LCD) and the chassis against excessive vibration. A spill resistant keyboard allows time to save and close your open files and turn off the machine.

This notebook is powered by the 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor from the newest "Santa Rosa" chipset. Providing an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, as well as excellent battery management, it also offers a speedy 800 MHz front-side bus and 2 MB L2 cache. A 1.3 megapixel digital web camera built into the LCD's bezel lets you quickly snap photos and participate in live video chats. Other features include a 200 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), quad-band Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with up to 256 MB of shared video RAM, biometric fingerprint scanner, and 5-in-1 memory card reader.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor has a 1.8 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The 200 GB Serial ATA hard drive is about double the average size for notebook PCs, however its 4200 RPM speed is a bit slower than current standard hard drives. It provides more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and video editing software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1 GB DDR2, PC5300) is an excellent start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It provides two DIMM slots and has a large 4 GB maximum RAM capacity. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 4x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio
This Toshiba Satellite has a 13.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing). It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 256 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with this notebook's integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You'll enjoy wireless connectivity to a wide range of peripherals with the built-in Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR (enhanced data rate), which offers up to three times the bandwidth of standard Bluetooth.

It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (though no PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 ExpressCard 54/34
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. 1 out of 5 stars Sucky brand   October 21, 2008

I've bought two Satellite laptops, and both have had their batteries fail within two years. One of them won't keep a charge for more than a few minutes, and sometimes powers off when you disconnect the AC power; the other sometimes just shuts down at the slightest movement. When we called the tech support, they didn't mention that the batteries were subject to recall; now I just found out, and Toshiba won't process the recall. I don't know if the problems are battery related, since it'll cost $500 to have Toshiba diagnose the problem. That's right, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS once it's out of warranty.

The screen on the newer laptop - just two years old - has gone funky, with some horizontal lines.

They both run somewhat warm, with the fan going nonstop.

As you can tell, these are my last Toshiba laptop purchases. It's great value for the first year, so enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars My Toshiba U305 is seriously defective, and tech support won't help.   December 27, 2007

When this machine works, it works fine. Unfortunately, I experienced two complete system crashes. The computer won't boot past a blue screen. All of my data are lost.

After doing a complete OS reinstall, the same problem happened again. Tech support won't send me a replacement. Instead, they are steering me towards a regional repair center, which will take 4-6 weeks. I have been on hold endlessly with customer support.

I can understand why most customers enjoy using this machine, but I suspect that a small percentage of customers like me will receive a lemon.

3 out of 5 stars Good Product .... Good Seller but Vista Sucks   October 19, 2007

Very good machine but only negalive point is it has Windows Vista. Option for Windows Xp would have made it a superb product.

5 out of 5 stars Great light, fast, full-featured laptop with extremely good battery life   October 15, 2007

- Battery lasts 4-5 hours easily under continuous "normal" use (with Vista Aero enabled), lasts all day with intermittent use. Earlier review may have been for similar model with smaller a battery - this one (U305-S5127) comes standard with 7800 mAh battery, the best battery I could find in a Core 2 Duo model after many hours of research anywhere near this price range.
- Even if you're considering a laptop several hundred dollars less, consider this one as you'll end up spending that and more if you ever need more RAM (and you will with Vista!), a larger battery, larger hard disk, bluetooth adapter, etc. Check the features on Toshiba.com - it's loaded!
- The screen is very clear, bright and easy to read; I wanted the smallest screen size (i.e. smallest, lightest laptop) that would not frustrate me - this is just as usable as my old HP 15". 12" was just too small. Considered a tablet, but I don't think the hinge would stand my abuse - this seems very sturdy.
- Fingerprint reader works well with every application I've tried, including Firefox, unlike a fingerprint reader I bought from Microsoft. It can be a bit finicky about accepting a fingerprint if you don't run your finger straight across it at the right speed, but with practice, it's not a big deal. I have it set to hibernate on screen closure, with fingerprint required after opening the lid - everything's protected from all but the most savvy thief/hacker simply by closing the lid.
- It does get a little warm on the left side, especially under hard use, but it certainly doesn't "overheat". In fact, I think Toshiba did an excellent job with heat management. The big copper CPU heat sink sits right at the left edge, blowing the CPU heat directly out of the laptop before it heats up and slows down all the other components. This may explain complaints about "heat", which is just a higher temperature concentrated in a smaller area - the rest of the laptop is cool. The CPU fan does cycle often, but I don't find it annoying, you can't even hear it with average background noise, and it extends battery life.
- Touchpad is small, but works fine. My fingers aren't small, but it wouldn't work for an NFL linebacker. L & R buttons are a little stiff, but tapping the pad works far faster on any touchpad anyway.
- Speakers are excellent for as tiny as they must be to fit into this small box - no distortion, clear sound, but obviously there's no bass.
- Really can't stand that all this power is sucked up by Windows Vista, but if I didn't get it now, I'm sure I'd pay extra for it later when some application I need won't run on XP, just like every Windows version to date.
I highly recommend this laptop for anyone needing a truly portable, long-life battery, powerful, full featured laptop at a reasonable price.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good but the speakers suck!   September 28, 2007

This is my second Toshiba satellite. My previous one (vintage 2002) held up for five pretty good years, albeit one or two kinks along the way, so for me that was enough to recommend another Toshiba. I'm not super tech savvy, just needed something to do the basic functions (internet, Office apps, watching the occasional DVD etc.) for another five years. I've only had it for two days but my biggest gripe would be that the speakers are ABYSMAL. Sound quality is very hollow and there is zero bass range on them. This is particularly disappointing given that (1) the speakers in my 2002 notebook were exceptionally good and (2) this is a pretty pimped out machine in terms of hardware - no reason to include bottom rung quality speakers!
