Processor
The Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure that packs in 47 million transistors into a single chip sized at just 22mm (0.87 inches), and it uses just 2.5 watts of power--less than 1/10 of the 35 watts used by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor--for excellent battery management. This 1.6 GHz Atom N270 processor also includes a power-optimized front side bus of 533 MHz for faster data transfer on demanding mobile applications and a 512 KB L2 cache (which temporarily stores data).

Storage
This version of the Aspire One comes with a 160 GB hard disk drive (5400 RPM), which offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory
The 1 GB of installed RAM (512 MB onboard memory and one 512 MB DIMM, 533 MHz) can be expanded to a maximum of 1.5 GB of RAM,

DVD/CD Drive

Screen, Video and Audio
The 8.9-inch screen has a WSVGA resolution (1024 x 600) and support for up a 262K color depth. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses shared video memory with the main memory. Acer's CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments.

This notebook includes an integrated audio card with Microsoft DirectSound compatibility, and it includes two stereo speakers.

5 out of 5 stars acer 8.9" mini-laptop   January 7, 2009

Amazing freedom for people who travel alot with their laptop. Weighs nothing. Takes up zero space. Long battery capability. I gave my one year old HP laptop to my son-in-law after travelling 3 weeks for business with my new acer mini-laptop. It doesn't lack for anything! Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars My new BFF   January 6, 2009

I love this little guy, we've been together for about two months. Keyboard is much easier than the EEE, which was the other contender. I have the white, so the aforementioned fingerprint issues are not a problem on this model. It handles all my internet and light software use with ease, and it is so transportable. Great on a plane. The only complaint is the poor tinny speakers (sound is fine if you put on headphones), which doesn't really bother me. Oh and also "new" yahoo mail wont' work on it, only Yahoo classic.

5 out of 5 stars Acer Aspire - worth the price   January 6, 2009

The Notebook is so small, it fits snuggly into my bag. It takes up very little space on my desk at school, while others with their regular size laptops have to clear books to make space. It's very practical for my use and with 160GB of memory, wireless and my webcam, I have all that I need.

4 out of 5 stars Minor things, but good stuff.   January 6, 2009

I have to say, I was on the fence about this one or the ASUS 8.9" netbook. This one was a gift for me for Christmas, so it's still in the evaluation phase. But here's what I can tell you:

- The touchpad is sensitive. I still have yet to get used to all of the functions associated with it... sometimes it's ready to scroll, sometimes it isn't. And one time it zoomed in, though I'm still puzzled on that one.

- The fan does turn on often, and usually stays on for a while. It isn't as loud as some would make it out to be, but it's noticable. (Put it this way... you should be fine in a classroom, but iffy in a library.)

- It IS a dust magnet... unavoidable really.

Good news is that it is very portable, very fast for the processor speed, and has a very clear screen. The on board speakers can get pretty loud. And I like the 2 different SD card reader bays; I actually wanted to take this with me when I go photographing, so it's a big help to be able to view the pics immediately before I leave the site. Also, the battery will keep it running for a long time; somewhere between 5 and 8 hours depending. (I have my brightness down low and screen rez dumbed down a little to save on juice.)

I can't really complain; this thing was mainly my alternative to a kindle. I wanted to get that, but I found out that the Kindle doesn't handle PDFs very well... so I figured for the same $$$ I might as well get a laptop.

So I'm still keeping an eye out for any bumps along the way, but so far it's a handy little machine.

4 out of 5 stars We like it   January 6, 2009

We are not computer gurus. We bought this for our daughter because it is small and easy to transport. It suits those needs perfectly. We also liked the fact that it uses XP as an operating system, since we've never heard anything good about Vista. The 6-cell battery seems to provide about 5 hours of use. I may have had a hard time adjusting to the keyboard, but she is young and flexible enough that she had no trouble at all.
