Donning a cool new Aspire notebook design, it offers a contrast between the high-tech, dark and glimmering exterior and the pearl-grey CeramiFinish interior of its Gemstone design concept. The 17-inch CrystalBrite display provides great color saturation and excellent contrast in all environments, and it's loaded with Intel GMA X3100 graphics with up to 358 MB of video memory shared with the system. This notebook is powered by the 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 dual-core processor and it comes with 2 GB of installed RAM (maximizing capacity). Other features include a 160 GB hard drive, 54g Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), multi-format/dual-layer DVD RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard 54 slot, and a multi-format memory card reader. Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: The 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. Each core shares 1 MB of L2 cache, and they have a 533 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 2 x 1 GB) maximizes the capacity for this notebook, and it also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents.
- Keyboard & Mouse: The keyboard features an inverted T cursor layout, embedded numeric keypad, hotkey controls, 2.5mm minimum key travel, and international language support. It also offers a touchpad with four-way integrated scroll button, WLAN easy launch button, volume adjustment wheel, and independent US dollar and Euro sign keys.
Screen, Video & Audio Get more multimedia viewing space than with traditional 4:3 XGA displays via the wide-aspect 17-inch screen (1280 x 800). Acer's CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments. It's great for sophisticated professional applications, photo manipulation, and immersive 3-D games. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which provides up to 287 MB of video memory allocated from the system. It also features Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays. Buyer Beware-Hardware and Customer Service Woes March 11, 2008 James K. Ditzenberger (Denver, CO, USA) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I wrote this review for another Acer laptop. I hope that Acer is a good company, but my experience with them has been terrible and I feel like I should at least tell the story. I recently purchased an Acer laptop (very similar to this model) and within a couple of dozen uses (for simple tasks like word processing and presentations), my mother board failed. A long story, but customer service turned out to be a nightmere and very unhelpful. A similar (not as extreme) problem happened with an HP and they were beautiful to work with. I regret not going with them this time! Buyer Beware.
Ecellent quality and price-performance February 17, 2008 Oscar Luppi (San Francisco) I was extremely happy with this purchase, the laptop came with "less than average" junk software loaded on it, the graphics card performs extremely well and the price-performance ratio is unbeatable.
Hard to beat at this price point February 16, 2008 K. Harby (Long Island, New York) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've owned one of these for 6 months, and I'm here to buy a second one. The screen is addictive, it is so clear and sharp and beautiful. It is shiny unlike usual computer screens. The touch of the keyboard is unusually pleasant, and the overall design is just plain cool. Looks great just sitting there. I agree that the speakers have too much high end (tinny), but they are loud. I run it through my sound system and it sounds lovely. Best feature is the dial for changing the volume, like an old-fashioned transistor radio volume control. Why can't other computer makers to this?? Other thing: I love the Vista operating system. Minority opinion, maybe, but I used to be a Macintosh person and to me Vista offers the best of both worlds. So, I'm buying a second one of these for the living room.
VERY GOOD FOR THE PRICE February 11, 2008 William W. Boyle 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Acer Aspire 7720-4428 17-Inch Laptop I'm very happy with the product for the price. The only things I think could be improved to make it even better are the processor speed , the speakers and the weight. None of these is a major concern, but are things that could make the unit close to perfect. The advertisements say the speakers are high quality and the subwoofer give superior sound. With external speakers plugged in it sounds great. The internal sounds tinny and I can't even notice the subwoofer. If you plan on listening to music on the go, be sure to use headphones. I'm under the impression that Vista uses a lot of the system, so XP Might speed things up. The weight goes along with the screen size, larger keyboard and heavier battery. It's not that bad just heavier than expected.
Great laptop deal... but Vista sucks eggs February 5, 2008 J. Cannon (USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This was an excellent deal on a 17" widescreen laptop. Very happy with the quality and 'feel' of the unit. Not much software is included... but that is okay. I like the wide keyboard layout with the numeric entry keypad like a standard keyboard. I am underimpressed with Vista to the point of saying it sucks eggs. It is prone to not coming out of hibernation cleanly... and saying there is a problem when there is none. All the warnings and security geegaws and doodads are annoying at best, detrimental at worst. But... once you find the means to shut such things off... the computer is an absolute steal.
