 Great little netbook...very cool styling November 1, 2009

Pros:
1. SSD 16g hard drive that seems fast
2. Battery lasts over 3 hours with only 3-cell battery
3. So much faster than I expected
4. Hyperthreaded with my Jolicloud/Ubuntu 9.10
5. Get Jolicloud to replace XP. Jolicloud (google it) works 'out of the box'
6. I bought a micro-thumb drive..pico-drive 16g for the expansion drive.
7. Only moving parts is one fan.
8. Storage is now 16g internal 1.8" SSD, 16g pico-drive and a fast SDHC 8g drive for my Jolicloud OS... Things are good!
9. I use a M-Audio Fast Track Pro usb break-out box for when it really matters... (much better audio out)
Cons:
1. VGA out requires some adapter I dont have yet... found it for $15 somewhere... might get it some day...
I use it all the time. It goes everywhere with me. Worked two DJ jobs. Use at school (job) everyday. Dont need to pay the extra money for the 10.1" screen so I am happy that I found this when stores where pushing out the old models(8.9") in favor for the new (10.1"). I upgraded the ram to 2 gigs with the savings....

This review has nothing to do with the netbook computer. However, I'm giving you my 2 cents on HP products in general. I have owned HP laser/inkjet printers in the past. Whenever anything went wrong with them, I called the HP service desk. They would go through their perfunctory tips on how to solve the problem, which never did any good. Don't they realize a human being with half a brain would've already tried what they suggested, such as rebooting the printer, making sure that it is plugged into an electrical outlet, making sure that the "on" button is turned on, etc.? My problem was that the cradle in the inkjet printer got stuck. After their useless tips, they would suggest I buy a new one and if I traded in my old one, I could get a discount on a brand new one through them. Well, their discount is not that much better than at Best Buy or other stores. And it just seemed like HP's service desk is more interested in selling more of their crappy products than trying to fix the products that we already own. After I hung up on them, I felt I had nothing to lose so I just grabbed the cradle and tried to get it unstuck. It worked and ever since then my printer has worked fine. (I had to get rid of it last year when I bought a new laptop that came with Windows Vista, which was incompatible with my HP inkjet printer. I replaced it with a Canon printer, which I highly recommend.) To make a long story short--HP'S SERVICE DESK WAS USELESS.

Very small, very lightweight, inexpensive, comfortable keyboard. If you mostly use the internet on your computer it's great. I like the HP brand, I've had problems with Dell products in the past. I considered internet on a smart phone but the size would be ridiculous. When you pass your 50th birthday it's nice to not have to type with your thumbs.

I recently bought the HP Mini 1115NR as part of a deal from Verizon, not from Amazon. I've been using it, or trying to use it, for a week or so, and at this moment am not experiencing "Yeaaay, perfect, exactly what I wanted to get."
Principal qvetch for now is the cost of wireless access through Verizon. More directly relevant to Amazon customers, and I think mentioned by others, is that the set-up of touch pad and left and right select keys is not only quite hard to get used to (I've usually migrated among keyboards and touch pads fairly transparently) but, more significantly, seems inaccurate. In other words, I'm constantly pointing to something, thinking I'm selecting it, and finding that the cursor is elsewhere so I'm selecting nothing or something else. Particularly irritating when online time is burning away.
Somehow it managed to use 95 mg in 1 1/2 days of doing nothing more than accessing e-mail. I'm not nearly techie enough to know if that's just the facts, ma'am, or a problem of this computer, but, again, really irritating.
Of course it has little or no software, but what it does have appears to be stuff that's shrieking at you to spend yet more money if you install it, such as some version of full Adobe Acrobat - naturally requiring you to go online, Norton Utilities, ditto; and it does have Microsoft Works, which is just irritatingly limited and only partly compatible, etc., all by itself.
CD/DVD drive has to be purchased - my mistake for forgetting that the external drive I own has an incompatible connector - will need to find out whether compatibility is anything special or any USB based drive will work. Connector to large monitor has to be specially purchased from HP for $35 for weird special fitting: fitting is apparently designed to be the access for a variety of other equipment. Sounds like not great news.
So far the documentation seems only semi-helpful. Computer is made in China.

First impressions? Nice screen, great keyboard and horrendously slow operating system. Took about 3 minutes to boot and just surfing the internet was a chore as the OS tried to struggle with the low amount of physical memory and relatively slow solid state hard drive.
Then I found that HP had developed their own version of Linux called Mi. So I decided to ditch XP and install HP's Linux.
The difference between Linux and Windows XP is like night and day. Linux is quicker to boot, quicker to run and load apps and surfing the net is as fast as it is on my main desktop PC.
If you have a netbook, especially one from HP, you owe it to yourself to switch over to Linux. It comes pre-loaded with Firefox, Open Office, games and a whole bunch of other useful applications. It's not hard, this was the first time I used Linux.

Command Line Interface:
Some people have complained that the Command Line Interface (CLI) is missing in this version. It isn't. To enable it, go to Settings, click on the Advanced Tab, then select "Customize Settings" and then finally, scroll down to where you see Root Terminal. Put a check mark in the box and voila, the Root Terminal program icon will now show in the Advanced Tab.
