Amazon.com Product Description Built for today's multimedia-savvy, always on-the-go computer user, the entertainment-centric HP Pavilion dv2740se Special Edition notebook PC provides quick access to your digital audio and video library wherever you roam. Weighing in at 5.25 pounds, it features the HP exclusive high-gloss, organic Verve imprint finish, which flows freely across the top cover then bursts across the palm rest area. A significant change in color appears as well, with a rich bronze top cover carrying through to the palm rest area to morph into golden copper shades then fade to deep black near the touch-sensitive media control panel. It offers a widescreen, BrightView 14.1-inch display, which provides improved viewing in direct sunlight. Control settings for audio and video playback from up to 10 feet away with the included HP remote, then store it conveniently in the PC card slot. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Optimized for mobile performance, it's powered by the 2.1 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-62 dual-core processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and higher throughput for simultaneous computing tasks. Other features include an extra-large 250 GB hard drive, 3 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), 54g Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g), multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD drive (which can also burn CDs), Nvidia GeForce Go 7150M video card with up to 1071 MB of total available video memory, multi-format memory card reader, and integrated Webcam for easy video conferencing. It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: The 2.1 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-62 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 512 KB L2 cache (for a 1 MB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) - Hard Drive: The 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive is more than double the average size for notebook PCs, and it offers a fast 5400 RPM disk speed--an improvement over other notebooks with extra-large hard drives. It provides more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and video editing software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: This notebook comes installed with 3 GB of RAM (DDR2), which helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. It has a 4 GB RAM capacity.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art. - Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio While this notebook is actually as wide as standard 15-inch displays, the high-definition, widescreen 14.1-inch display (1280 x 800-pixel resolution) has the same form factor as a 12-inch screen--taking up less space on your desk. Video is powered by the integrated Nvidia GeForce Go 7150M graphics/video card, which provides up to 1071 MB of total graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which includes both super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire: - 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals

Excellent Laptop December 4, 2008 Robert Mills I have had this computer for almost a year now.. 10 months as a matter of fact and it has NOT failed me once! Its still as fast as when I bought it. The 3GB memory, 250 hard drive 2.10 Ghz processor... its just awesome and so light weight. Ive had a few other laptops in my life but this one here tops ALL other laptops.
A Review After 6 Months of Ownership October 1, 2008 Kyle E. George (Las Vegas, NV United States) I bought this laptop in February 2008 after my previous HP Pavilion (1040US) finally bit the dust. I am an extremely heavy computer user and on many days, can spend between 12 to 16 hours working on my computer. There were several reasons I bought this computer after owning another HP. When my previous computer died, I was in the middle of a project that had to be completed within a few days, and did not have the luxury of ordering and waiting for a computer online. I was attracted to the HP DV2718 because of its looks, its price and its impressive specs. I have no real complaints about its performance, and although it is somewhat laggy, I put more of that blame on Vista than on the machine itself. However, there are some negatives. The wireless switch is POORLY located. If one uses this laptop as intended (on a lap), it is extremely easy to accidentally toggle the wireless switch. It is located on the front edge of the machine, and does not click into place, so the slightest brush is sufficient to move it. The machine gets extremely hot under heavy usage. Unless placed on a hard surface such as a table, tray or book, the area around the fan gets HOT. It is not just warm, it is actually hot enough to be practically untouchable. This is symptomatic of the AMD chips, and although I am a fan of AMD, it is just unsuitable for this computer. The power cord sticks straight out of the side of the machine. Because of this, bumps and contact against the side of machine has caused the AC port to feel wobbly over time. Furthermore, the powercord would have held up better had it been formed at a right angle to the machine - preventing fraying over time. If this was positioned on the back of the machine like previous generations of HP Pavilions, it would be much less of an issue. When I pick this computer up, I usually lift it with my left hand, with my thumb on the area next to the touch pad, and the other four fingers at the bottom. Well, over time the plastic cover over the hard drive has developed a crack. Precisely, the crack has formed where the air slots joins the more solid part of the cover. A more minor complaint I have is that there is no hardware switch for the built in webcam and microphone. On some chat clients, if your chat partner turns on video, it will automatically turn yours on too, which may lead to some embarrassing moments if not properly prepared. Although the blue lights are a very pleasing color, there is a colored ring around the port into which the AC connector plugs in. This light stays on for as long as the machine is plugged in, which means that if you use this computer in bed, charging it through the night is annoying because of the distractingly bright light. I hope this review is helpful. I greatly enjoyed my previous HP Pavilion, but I believe that less thought went into the design of this machine, than into its previous incarnations. Yes, it is a good looking machine, but in this case, function does not follow form.
Too Many Flaws For The Price August 28, 2008 R. Dubrow (Philadelphia) I only use a computer to surf the net and correspond via e-mail. The bells and whistles on most systems are meaningless to me. Nonetheless, I was persuaded to get a higher end computer with lots of memory and Hard Disc space on the premise that it would run faster and smoother. This one doesn't. Indeed, my 1 GB machines run faster. This one is very fast at startup, but that is it. In addition, if I allow the machine to go into sleep mode, the screen will stay dark. I must do a complete shut down, then re-boot. The touchpad is horrible - overly sensitive one minute then non responsive the next. The keypad, after three months use, has started to get very hard to use. In addition, occasionally the screen will suddenly go dark and the HP Media Center starts up by itself(and my fingers are nowhere near the touch sensors). Again, I am not a computer expert, but for my simple purposes this machine is a major disappointment.
avoid this computer April 28, 2008 Lee Martin 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have purchased an HP pavilion notebook, and have had it for a little over a year. First, the wireless internet went out on it, which HP replaced under warranty. Then the speakers went out exactly 14 days after the warranty expired. HP refused to do this under warranty. Then the power button became almost impossible to use, so I basically have to leave it in standby. A word on the flashy appearance- while it looks really nice, it is acutally a really poor design from a functional standpoint- the slick surface gets uncomfortable after a brief use, the power button is obviously poorly constructed, and the touch pad is uncomfortable as well. The battery life has been consistently bad. I've now had it just over a year, and I get about 45 minutes on a full charge. As for customer service, HP is terrible. However, you don't need to take my word for it- Look at the November 2007 issue of Consumer Reports. You'll find that HP's customer service is rated very poorly, their quality is bad, and that overall, other products are rated higher, and for a lower price.
Customer Support? Right April 21, 2008 Cheryl Dee Hillendahl (Santa Cruz) A lot of folks have run into problems with HP customer support. Problem is that this is outsourced (shame on you HP). In February customer support had us ship my wife's HP back for repairs. After numerous calls and no update to the website, we were about ready to give up. A local radio hotline show recommended sending a snail mail to higher ups, so we sent letters, polite but firm, with all the details, to the HP CEO and VP of consumer product services. Less than a week later we were contacted by a customer quality control supervisor. My wife now has a new computer. Hopefully this one doesn't belly up on us.
