Amazon.com Product Description
Designed for fast access to your entire entertainment library, the HP Pavilion dv6365us notebook PC is a great choice for both families and business travelers on the go. The 15.4-inch high-definition BrightView display looks good even in direct sunlight, and you'll enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the included HP remote, then store it conveniently in the Express card slot. Easily manage your digital photo library and share with friends and family using the included HP Photosmart Premier software. This stylish laptop also features a high-gloss, durable HP Imprint finish with an inlaid design.

This notebook is powered by the 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. It provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance. This notebook also features a 160 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (maximizing capacity), built-in tri-mode Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g), multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard slot, and Intel GMA 950 graphics card. It also has an integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam (and integrated microphone), enabling easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats.

This laptop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 processor has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory maximizes the capacity of this notebook, which is par for the course for multimedia-centric laptops (though small in comparison to multimedia-oriented desktops). But you'll be able to handle immersive 3-D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications right out of the box.

  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which displays an 18 percent larger picture than standard 15-inch screens and offers up to an 18 percent improvement in contrast ratio. It has a widescreen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 224 MB of shared video memory. It also offers an integrated audio card and built-in Altec Lansing speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
The Intel PRO wireless LAN 3945ABG provides a tri-mode network connection (supporting 802.11a/b/g), with throughput up to 54 Mbps at 5 GHz (802.11a) and 2.4 GHz (802.11g). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (though no standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 ExpressCard 54/34
  • 2 headphone jacks (1 with S/PDIF digital audio compatibility) and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 notebook expansion port 3 (for use with the HP xb3000 Expansion Base or the HP Notebook QuickDock)
  • 1 consumer IR (infrared)
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with basic computing needs, such as surfing the Internet, corresponding with friends and family using e-mail, or performing basic document creation and editing tasks. 5 out of 5 stars love this hp   January 3, 2008

I bought this laptop for my last two years of college (after having this laptop I am suprised I lasted the for first degree without it). The 2GB of RAM is awesome for Vista (friends of mine made the mistake of purchasing laptops with only 1GB of RAM and found that Vista does not run well with only 1GB, Vista really needs the 2GB of RAM to work right). Screen clarity is great. The battery lasts for about three hours if you do not change any settings to extend battery life; the power saving settings are available, but I don't need to use it for more than three hours at a time so I never made the changes. Using the Windows Easy Transfer was easy after I set up a wireless connection (using a Wireless G Broadband Router with my desktop still at the main computer desk), I didn't even have to physically connect the computers in order to transfer my files (this part took awhile, but I had a lot of stuff on my desktop to copy over to the laptop, honestly I am suprised it didn't take longer). I like that you can control the volume with the touch of a finger just above the keyboard (also from here you can stop, play, pause, mute, etc). The CD Burner is a lot faster than my desktop ever was.

Mainly I use this for class. I haven't had any problems with the keyboard or the fingerpad at all. I can sit in the classroom and get feed from my professors that helps with the classes. I haven't had any overheating problems. It seems like no matter what device I buy works with this laptop. I had trouble with that with my desktop. The laptop isn't picky about which usb I insert stuff into (on my desk top it always made me use a certain one first and only for certain things). I've connected my mp3 player to it, removable storage, and a video camera.

What's even nicer is the HP Total Care Advisor. It comes up first thing when you turn the computer on. For people like me who aren't perfectly tech savvy this is nice, because it's basically the "Complete Dummies Guide to What Exactly is Going On With Your Computer." It tells you how strong your internet connection is (with the router it's perfect), security, back ups, printer, updates (the pop-ups I find to be particularly annoying, this is much nicer and it explains whether you really need it or not), pc health, and your battery.

This laptop is versatile. That is one thing that drove me bonkers when shopping for a laptop; several of the laptops in my price range did not function well in "extreme conditions". As it turns out "extreme conditions" was a loose translation of "anywhere that wasn't your desk and the laptop couldn't be moved at all." What is the point of getting something portable if it really isn't? This hp works great and I have yet to use it at my desk. I've used it everywhere else though: while bouncing around to some music when doing homework, scrolling through stuff going up stairs and holding the computer at odd angles, on the top of a scattered pile of books and notes, and my insane list could go on.

The speed is great. I haven't used the DVD burner or the webcam yet. It does way more stuff than I will ever actually need it to do, but it's great that it's there. Mostly I love that it was more affordable and does all the stuff I need it to with out me having to worry if it's going to be tempermental or take forever to do small tasks. It's perfect for people like me who are students on a budget.

P.S. This laptop also has survived my eight year old with flying colors.

-Update as of 8/22/2008-
The laptop is still running great! I have used it for spring semester and summer session without any problems. Some of my courses require quite a bit of streaming and the laptop is very fast (with a cable internet connection) even when compared to other brands that are supposed to "do more," even though this one is clearly superior! I did finally use the microphone (located on both sides of the web cab just above the screen). You do have to either really speak up or get close to the microphone when you're talking in order for your voice to record.
Update as of 12/14/2008
Unfortunately, this laptop does not play blu-ray. On the up side I just used Access and Visio for an entire semester without any problems!
