Forget Password? Buy New Laptop!!! November 6, 2008 A. Richard (Erie, PA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Here is the short version of my review - "DONT BUY! IF YOU FORGET THE PASSWORD THEN YOU NEED TO THROW AWAY THE LAPTOP OR PAY $500 TO LENOVO TO REPLACE THE MOTHERBOARD AND HARDDRIVE. I recently bought a Y510 Ideapad from Lenovo. Right out of the box the machine runs a program called Veriface which is supposed to be a face recognition application - this works well only if you are in a well lighted place otherwise it keeps complaining. Also, first time out of the box the machine asks you for your name and then makes up a username for you and then asks you to enter a password. Most people hit the return key here, i.e. no password - I mistakenly entered a password. I then forgot it and that was the end of the Y510. the second time I logged in it asked me for the password and since I could not remember it I entered the BIOS. In most computers you can set the password here and I was able to set the User/Supervosor/HD password here. I then tried to log in again and surprise! it would not let me log in. It kept on asking me for the old password. From this time onwards I was also unable to use my HD password or other passwords. I am certain I remember my Supervisor/HD passwords since I set it to what I use at work but mysteriously these would not work. I have returned the laptop to Support who have told me that since none of the passwords work they will have to change the motherboard and HD, now here is the kicker, the cost for this is $500. So, my sincere advice to you is, dont buy this laptop and also, dont buy Lenovo because if you do an internet search you will find others in the same predicament as myself.
Missing Hard Drive Capacity September 27, 2008 D. Tierney 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
160 GB just isn't what it used to be. When the dust settles plan on having a 105 GB hard drive. The missing 55 GB is allocated between the D-partition (27.1 GB) and the pre-installed OneKey Recovery feature. So if you need more hard drive capacity you might want to think about upgrading.
Happy with purchase September 4, 2008 Kat (Brooklyn, NY) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've had the Y510 for almost a month. I'm happy with it; its my first laptop purchase ever. I'm using it for very basic use but the internet is fast, the screen looks great and Vista is working well so far. Just hooked up a wireless printer - the installation was quick and easy. It's a little heavier then I would have liked, touch pad has a mind of its own sometimes but that could user error. Screen does show a lot of finger prints, but just wipe with cloth Lenovo provides and its fine. So far so good.
Be Careful with Your Purchase. August 23, 2008 Mr. Science (Ann Arbor, MI) 3 out of 37 found this review helpful
I purchased a Lenovo Y510 2 months ago. It works fine, is very responsive, with good memory, RAM, etc. To my shock, I recently found out that Lenovo does not make a Docking Station for the computer! In fact, they have no idea if they ever will. I spoke to their representatives for nearly an hour and got nowhere, other than stalling. When referred to the Complaint Dept. I got a recording. One would think that a professional (?) mfg. firm would provide ancillary support items!!!!
