Amazon.com Product Description
At 15.67 by 10.94 by 1.67 inches and a comparatively hefty 9.3 pounds, HP's new Pavilion zd7010us Notebook PC may be too cumbersome for those who regularly carry their notebook on their daily journeys. However, the unit is a perfect fit for anyone who needs the luxuries of a desktop PC in a portable format. Featuring powerful processing, competent 3-D performance and a breathtaking oversized display, the Pavilion zd7010us is a very capable desktop replacement.

A computer is only as fast as its processor will allow, and the Pavilion zd7010us sports one of the fastest mobile CPUs on the market, a 2.66 GHz Intel Pentium 4 with 512 KB Level 2 cache. The system also features 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory running at 333 MHz, and an nVidia GeForce4 440 Go graphics chipset with 64 MB dedicated video memory. With this level of power at their command, users will find precious few tasks they can't efficiently operate.

Even when the business day ends, you'll want to keep the Pavilion zd7010us close by. Sporting a massive 17-inch display (in widescreen format and supporting resolutions up to 1440 by 900), built-in Harman Kardon speakers, and a combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, the unit is ready to lend impressive sound and visuals to everything from 3-D games to the latest DVD movies. DVD writing is not supported in this configuration.

With the Pavilion zd7010us, future connectivity is assured. The system features no less than four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for linking with external peripherals such as scanners and optical drives, one FireWire port for fast data transfers with high-tech toys such as digital camcorders, an S-Video TV-Out, a v.90 modem, 10/100Base-T Ethernet, and Broadcom 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g wireless. HP has even installed a 4-in-1 Digital Reader to accommodate memory cards from devices such as digital cameras and PDAs. To make sure you have enough space for all your files, the system also includes a sizable 60 GB hard disk.

The Pavilion zd7010us is equipped with a broadrange of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Quicken New User Edition, Microsoft Money, and a variety of multimedia utilities.

1 out of 5 stars Motherboard died - HP can`t repair   April 13, 2007

I also had the problem of the "blown motherboard". As I read now, this is a common problem with this HP.
I live in Argentina and HP-Argentina won't even try to fix it. I have to buy a new notebook.
Rating: 1 star for the HP Pavilion zd7010 and 1 star for HP customer service. I would rate them with a zero, but Amazon doesn't give that option.

1 out of 5 stars Battery Latch Broken - HP Lost Computer - Claims No Responsibility   December 26, 2006

Amazon is a great company and have many great buys on line here, however HP Buyer's please be wary. If you never have a problem with your computer, you will likely be happy. However if you send it in for service, you may be in big trouble. I sent mine in for a broken battery latch. This, by the way, was extremely weak for the task of holding the battery in the housing. However, the worst part is that I shipped it to HP under warranty. HP service is now claiming that they shipped it back to me, however they can not give me a valid tracking number. They say I should take my troubles to Fed/Ex. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am out the cost of the computer as far as I can tell and HP is claiming no responsibility. HP LOST the computer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Desktop Replacement   November 13, 2005

I bought the zd7010 on a whim to replace my atrotious Gateway two years ago. I usually don't buy HP products, especially since HP and Compaq are one and the same. However, I have never been happier with it. I havent had a problem with it yet. I have read the earlier reviews on this site about putting to memory sticks in it and it wont work. Well I put two good quality sticks of 512Mb in it and had no problems. I suspected they put low quality sticks in it. Also, if people think this laptop is loud, then they dont have a real gaming computer at home. Anyway, this laptop has run everything I have thrown at it, including half life 2. I have also literally went around the globe with it on numerous times on several deployments. I would recommend this laptop to anyone

1 out of 5 stars Year down the line and its a great door stop   June 27, 2005

This is a great laptop, works like a desktop, a tad loud but bearable. Unfortunately the power jack has come lose and it means I can't power it on anymore. Read more about this problem at: http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/bb/ftopic73146-0-asc-0.html

or http://broken.typepad.com/b/2004/03/compaq_laptop_p.html

From reading forums this problem goes back to 2002 and affects other makes of latop where the DC jack design doesn't take in enough of the power cable leaving it open to user abuse. When I say abuse I don't mean chucking it around, I think catching it a few times is enough to dislodge it from the PCB - sooner or later this will result in a blown motherboard (from what I've read online).

I've not used other HP products but I would advise anybody spending 1000 plus on any laptop to search online for any potential design issues as well as take out an extended cover.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy!! Two Major Problems   February 10, 2005

First, it is the noisiest laptop I've ever heard -- possibly noisier than any desktop. This is just inexcusable and I feel that it could have been avoided.

Second, and far worse, it has a defect. It will start spontaneously shutting down for apparently no reason. I have researched online and found other references to it. HP claims that it happens with Photoshop or other intensive applications, but I don't run any. They also claim that it happens only when you have two sticks of RAM installed. I did, so I removed one, tried changing slots, and changing sticks. Nothing worked. It's still shutting down.

Of course, there is a one-year warranty and my unit is 14 months old, so I was told I was out of luck. It will cost $279 plus whatever parts they need (new mainboard??). In addition, their customer service is useless. They know nothing and you can tell they just recite policy and can do nothing else. Sounded like an Indian outsource situation to me.

In short, DO NOT BUY THE zd7010us!! You will avoid a very bad experience.

I hope this is helpful.
